For almost century Lantom (Plumeria) trees were normally found in Buddhist temples, palaces and ancient cities with the strong prohibitions of older people to bring flowers or plant near to the residential areas. Lantom was described the deviation from the word Ratom having related meaning as sorrow and sadness, where the plant usually located, it made the strong belief as unpleasant flowered tree for any living soul.

The past decades some modern Thais who had ever lived abroad did not follow the old belief especially the trend of Bali Style houses and resorts has become prominent on tourism inThailand. About 5 years ago the Plant was renamed by a group of plant dealers as Lilavadee.

 

As this loving flowered plant had long been ignored for century, and when it became acceptable lately, the different views from historians, academic group and botanists in the form of narrated assumptions otherwise;

a. Lantom was actually the compound word of Lan and Tom where the first meant Breaking Away or Getting Rid Of. So the plant should have had the positive implication of happiness as a consequence from breaking away the sorrow.

b. Lantom was literally deviated from the ancient Khmer, Sarantom which had the meaning referred to The Great Love.

c. Etc.
